Move the Bee! š
Move, turn and glide a bee over to a flower.
Move the Bee! š
Bees fly from flower to flower to collect nectar. Let's make a bee move! The Motion blocks are blue.
Moving and turning
when flag clicked move (50) steps turn right (15) degrees move (50) steps
- move (50) steps goes forward. A bigger number = farther.
- turn right (15) degrees turns the sprite a little.
Gliding is smooth āØ
glide moves slowly, like real flying:
when flag clicked go to x: (-150) y: (0) glide (2) secs to x: (150) y: (50) say [Yum, nectar!] for (2) seconds
š”š§ x is left ā right. y is down ā up. The middle of the stage is x: 0, y: 0.
š ļø Build it!
- Click the cat and delete it, or keep it as a friend.
- Click Choose a Sprite š±+ and search for a bee (a butterfly or ladybug works too). Add a flower as well, or paint one!
- Click the bee and build the glide script above.
- Drag the flower to the right side of the stage.
- Click the š¢ flag. Does the bee reach the flower?
ā Bonus: add a second glide block so the bee visits two flowers.
šø Fun fact
Bees help plants make fruit and seeds by carrying pollen from flower to flower. Many fruits and vegetables need them!
Build it in Scratch!
Open Scratch in a new tab, find the blocks shown above (they're the same colors!), snap them together and click the green flag. Then try the challenge ideas in the lesson.
Open Scratch āScratch is free and made by MIT for kids. You can build without an account. To keep a project, ask a grown-up to help you sign in, or use File ā Save to your computer.
