Costumes = Animation
Make a penguin waddle by switching costumes.
Costumes = Animation 🐧
Cartoons are lots of pictures shown fast. Each picture is a little different, so it looks like it's moving! In Scratch, a sprite's pictures are called costumes.
Waddle, penguin, waddle!
when flag clicked forever next costume move (5) steps wait (0.2) seconds if on edge, bounce end
- next costume switches to the sprite's next picture.
- wait (0.2) seconds slows it down so you can see it.
- if on edge, bounce turns the sprite around at the edge of the stage.
💡🧠 Click the Costumes tab (top left) to see a sprite's pictures. Many sprites have 2 or more!
Stop it flipping upside down
when flag clicked set rotation style [left-right v]
🛠️ Build it!
- Choose the Penguin 2 sprite (or any animal with 2+ costumes).
- Pick a snowy backdrop. ❄️
- Build both scripts.
- Click the 🟢 flag and watch it waddle!
⭐ Bonus: change wait to 0.5. Is it faster or slower?
🐧 Fun fact
Emperor penguins can't fly, but they're amazing swimmers. They can dive hundreds of meters deep to catch fish!
Build it in Scratch!
Open Scratch in a new tab, find the blocks shown above (they're the same colors!), snap them together and click the green flag. Then try the challenge ideas in the lesson.
